Although mealworms can be refrigerated to slow their metabolisms and keep them dormant for periods of time, keeping mealworms fed and active will result in a healthier feeder for your animals. Mealworms are easily kept in a plastic container with ventilation holes in the lid. 1” – 2” of bran or rolled oats should be added to the container as a substrate which the worms live in and eat. Mealworms require moisture but adding a water dish is not advisable as they can spill and make the substrate wet. Instead, simply add carrot or potato slices into your container once or twice a week. This will provide your mealworms with moisture, food and will keep the substrate dry and mold free. Once a month your mealworms should be removed and their container should be thoroughly cleaned. Add additional substrate as needed. Mealworms do not require light.
